On Britain’s green hotel scene, The Green House in Bournemouth is one of the latest additions.

Recently, the 32-bedroom, boutique hotel in a privately-owned Victorian Villa completed a ?5m renovation.

Chef Gordon Jones (above), formerly host of Virgin Cooks on BBC3, heads up the hotel’s kitchen.? He works with local suppliers to bring the best food from all around Dorset and Hampshire?to The Green House.

The hotel’s environmental features include:

• 100% UK wool fabrics woven on the isle of Bute;
• British designed and made wallpaper printed with vegetable ink;
• Organic goose down duvets;
• Solid hard wood furniture recycled or hand crafted from fallen UK trees;
• Solar thermal energy;
• Low flow showers;
• Energy efficient lighting;
• Locally-sourced food;
• Organic and biodynamic wines;

More and more green hotels are opening around the world.

In the United States, two of the newest green hotels are Marriott hotels in Atlanta, Georgia’s Gateway Complex.

The SpringHill Suites Atlanta Airport Gateway is LEED registered by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and could become Atlanta’s first LEED Gold hotel.

The second hotel,? the Atlanta Marriott Gateway, will apply for LEED Silver status when it opens in August.

These hotels’ environmental features include:

• Close proximity to alternative transportation;

• Accessibility to Atlanta airport’s new SkyTrain;

• Landscape and irrigation design that reduces water consumption;

• A white roof to reduce heat absorption;

• Low-flow plumbing and shower fixtures;

• Energy efficient lighting;

• Low-VOC paint, sealants and carpets;

• Monitoring and testing indoor air quality;

• Guests access to thermostats to control personal environments;

• Recycling in centralized locations,

• Hybrid rental cars;

• Premium parking spaces for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles;

• Paperless billing and

• Green meeting options and materials.

One of South America’s latest green hotels is Casa Ceibo Boutique Hotel & Spa, in Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador.

Recently, the 18-r00m hotel won the Five Star Green Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Services’ (AAHS).

Says Karen Dixon, international general manager, AAHS:

“Casa Ceibo delivers an exceptionally luxurious experience, yet many aspects of the property, its services and people fulfill a mission of environmental, cultural and social consciousness that’s downright extraordinary.”

The hotel’s green features include:

• Employing local artisans and craftsmen to build the property;
• Reforesting threatened mangroves;
• Choosing Ecuadorian vendors and hiring local staff;
• Partnering with area guides and regional operations;
• Supporting a clean-water program for a nearby community.

A Conde Nast Johansens hotel, Casa Ceibo is a founding member in Ecuador for the Chaine de Rotisseurs, an international gastronomic society.

Also, Smart Voyager has certified Casa Ceibo in its Ecuadorian green seal program that recognizes conservation and sustainability.

Infinity pools give the effect that the water extends to the horizon. In reality, the water spills over the edge into a catchment below, and is then pumped back into the pool. The pools have two circulation systems. The first functions like that of a regular pool, filtering and heating the water in the main pool. The second filters the water in the catch basin and returns it to the upper pool.

Travelocity has expanded its green hotel offerings in the Asia Pacific and other regions.

The company has joined forces with EC3 Global, a certifier of sustainable travel and tourism organizations, to showcase sustainable hotels throughout Asia-Pacific.

So far, Travelocity has flagged 1,900+ hotels site-wide with it signature eco-friendly leaf.? The site now lists more green hotels in Asia-Pacific destinations including Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and China.

Through the EarthCheck Certification and Benchmarking Program, each hotel has been audited by a qualified third-party professional who checks the effectiveness of sustainable practices applied. EC3 Global manages this program which is used by 1,o00+ organizations in over 60 countries.

Travelocity says it works hard to highlight earth-friendly hotels and guard against green-washing by not accepting “self-certified” hotels for the Green Hotel Directory.

Says Alison Presley, manager of Travelocity’s Travel for Good program:

“It’s important that our eco-friendly leaf icon in the hotel shopping path is a symbol consumers can trust. There is no way to verify that a self-certified hotel is truly sustainable. And we know our consumers depend on us to hold the line against green-washing.”

Hotels featured in Travelocity’s Green Hotel Directory must have a certification program whose checklist closely aligns with the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria.
